When to Mow Your Lawn in Texas
Month-by-month schedule · South Texas
South Texas lawns don't follow the same schedule as the rest of the country. Here in San Antonio, Kirby, Windcrest, and Converse, we usually get 8–9 months of active growth. Here's the schedule we run for our own customers at Quick Kutz.
January – February
Dormant season. Skip mowing. Sharpen blades and clear leaves so your grass wakes up clean.
March
First mow of the year — usually mid-to-late March in San Antonio. Cut a little lower to clear off dead top growth.
April – May
Growth explodes. Mow every 7 days. Never remove more than 1/3 of the blade at once.
June – August
Peak Texas heat. Raise the deck (3–3.5" for St. Augustine, 1.5–2.5" for Bermuda) and mow weekly. Water deeply, less often.
September – October
Growth slows as nights cool. Stretch mowing to every 10–14 days.
November – December
Final mow before dormancy, usually late November. Mulch leaves as you go.
Quick rules for South Texas lawns
- • Mow in the evening once the sun is off the grass.
- • Keep blades sharp — torn tips brown out fast in the heat.
- • Leave clippings on the lawn to feed the soil.
- • Water 1" per week, in one or two deep sessions.
